Easy Peanut Butter Dog Treat Recipe

My dog, Brody, thinks of himself as a fine dining connoisseur of any meats or veggies that wind up in his bowl … or on the floor. But his favorite thing of all time has to be peanut butter. So, when I found myself with an overly ripe banana one weekend, I thought I would make him some homemade dog treats. He would enjoy them way more than we would enjoy another loaf of banana bread!

I found a great recipe at The Cookie Rookie and decided to try it. These DIY dog treats were extremely easy to put together; the only thing I changed was the shaping.

The original recipe tells you to roll them out and cut them into shapes like sugar cookies. There were a couple problems with that. First, this dough was not suited to rolling as it was extremely sticky. Second, umm, Brody gobbled one of these down without glancing at it. He could care less if they were in the shape of a bone or hydrant! So, I decided to save myself some time and effort and turn these into smashed cookies.

Fair warning, though, if you do not make them into shapes…warn your family that they are for the four-legged members only! My husband grabbed one while I was showering and told me my cookies tasted like crap. LOL :-) However, they would be suitable for humans, too, if you added a cup of sugar!!

Are Homemade Dog Treats Healthier?

100%! Store-bought dog treats contain a lot of preservatives, fats, flavorings, and chemicals since they have to sit on store shelves for extended periods of time. When you make homemade dog treats, you know exactly what ingredients are going into them. This peanut butter dog treat recipe uses only 6 ingredients, which are good for your dog.

Can Dogs Eat Peanut Butter?

Yes, it’s perfectly safe to feed your dog peanut butter as long as it’s done in moderation AND does not contain xylitol. This sugar substitute, found in certain human foods, can be poisonous to your dog.

According to the FDA, dogs quickly absorb xylitol in the bloodstream, which can result in a dangerously high insulin release. That rapid release can decrease blood sugar within 10-60 minutes and can be life-threatening if untreated.

What You’ll Need

With only 6 ingredients, these homemade peanut butter dog treats are a snap to put together. Your four-legged friend will be so happy you did! Scroll down to the recipe card for specific amounts.

  • Egg
  • Crunchy Peanut Butter – Any brand is fine – just be sure it doesn’t have any xylitol in it.
  • Banana – I like to use a nice ripe banana for these treats.
  • Honey
  • Oats – Old-fashioned oats are great.
  • Wheat Germ – If you don’t have wheat germ, you can substitute all-purpose flour instead.

How to Make Peanut Butter Dog Treats

These homemade dog treats come together in under 30 minutes. Look no further if you’ve been looking for the perfect snack for your pet. This Peanut Butter Dog Treat recipe is made with whole foods, so you can be confident your dog isn’t eating things he shouldn’t. Here’s how to make them.

  • Prepare for Baking. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Cover a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicon baking mat.
  • Mix all the Ingredients Together. Stir together the egg, peanut butter, mashed banana, and honey in a medium bowl until well combined. Add in the oats and wheat germ and mix until you have a cohesive batter.
  • Roll Dough Balls. Roll the dough into 1 1/2-inch balls between your hands and then place them on the prepared baking sheet.
  • Bake. Bake the treats for 15 minutes or until they’re a nice golden brown. When you remove the cookies from the oven, immediately smash them into a flat disk with the bottom of a glass. Doing this while the cookies are still hot will prevent them from crumbling or breaking later.
  • Cool. Place the smashed peanut butter dog treats on a wire rack to cool completely.

How to Store

You can save these peanut butter dog treats for up to a week. Keep them in a ziplock bag on the counter or your pantry – anywhere your favorite pooch can’t grab them!

Anyone making this recipe or others with peanut butter, please make sure your peanut butter doesn’t contain Xylitol!

‘Xylitol, a sweetener used in many foods, including peanut butter, yogurt, toothpaste and chewing gum, is safe for humans but potentially deadly for dogs. If ingested, it can cause seizures, liver failure and death, warned one animal hospital, which called xylitol “extremely toxic” to dogs’

I enjoy your website and your blog. Its always good to see another animal lover out there but [I’m just saying this out of love] that not all veggies, fruits and foods are good for dogs. Tomatoes are one of them. Avocados, Chocolate, Grapes, Rasins, Salmon, onions, garlic, Salt, Caffeine, Coconut oil or water, Citrus, Xylitol and diet sugars…..etc.  Please check with your ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center or your veterinarian. Some of these can cause major damage to a dogs health in the long term and even death.  Please be careful.

I made this for Jasper my Goldendoodle and Lucy my Beagle. Both of them loved them. Mine are darker because I used a toasted wheat germ so I might try plain flour next time. Was wondering what you mean by old fashioned oats? I used large flake this time but next time might use quick oats because they are smaller. No matter what, I will make these again.

My Thea loves these. She will do anything for peanut butter. I love that this is all from staples we had on hand. I’ve made these a few times now and once I chopped carrot finely to add because that’s a fave of hers too. I just tossed the chopped bits in flour to keep them firm and the rest of the cookie from getting soggy. Worked great. She loves the crunchy bits

My pup sniffed around for 10 minutes after I gave him his treat, just searching for some leftover crumbs! He loved them!!!

What a great recipe! I found this recipe earlier and wanted to try it before commenting and WOW! My dogs absolutely loved them – I used the wheat germ and not the flour and they looked, smelled, and evidently tasted fantastic. Thanks for posting the recipe. Oh – and Brody is ADORABLE!

I just made these for my Bailey this afternoon, and she is still sitting at my feet whimpering for more. Somehow, though I have never ever baked anything for my dog previously, she knew they were for her, and she layed down in front of the stove (which she NEVER does) waiting for them to finish baking. This one is definitely a keeper!

That is too funny that your husband ate one your dog’s cookies! I’ve been looking for some new treats to make my dog, but I’ll be sure warn my husband when I try these. My dog has a history of stealing banana bread – so these cookies would be right up his alley. His name is Ruffy, and I have a picture of him on this post about his banana bread-stealing ways: http://bit.ly/eDEQtp. Love your dog pics too – especially the one where he is licking his nose.
