Tagalong!*

Why don’t those little bitches  Girl Scouts sell cookies year round? Seriously? They are like cookie drug dealers. They are EVERYWHERE for a month. They are at the grocery store pushing their product when you go in and out. They show up at your door batting their adorable little eyes and pushing even more cookies on you. They get you hooked…and then they disappear for a year. It’s incredibly wrong and totally unfair. I was seriously considering buying a box of Tagalongs on Ebay until I did a quick little google search to find that I can actually make my own!

So I did. And let me tell you, I think I might be able to avoid buying a box or thirty next year. These were a perfect substitute for the Girl Scout’s version of a Tagalong and they really didn’t take much time at all to make. Plus, I bet you already have everything you need in your kitchen! Now if someone can come up with a serious replacement for Thin Mints, I might just cry.

Tagalongs!

Yield: about 3 dozen cookies

Ingredients:

Cookies
1 cup butter, room temperature
1/2 cup sugar
2 cups all purpose flour
1/4 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
2 tbsp milk

Filling
1 1/2 cups creamy peanut butter (natural or regular)
3/4 cup confectioners’ sugar
generous pinch salt
1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Coating
about 8 oz. semisweet chocolate chips
2 oz cocoa butter OR 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

In a large mixing bowl, cream together butter and sugar. Mix in flour, baking powder and salt at a low speed, followed by the vanilla and milk. The dough should come together into a soft ball.

Take a tablespoon full of dough and flatten it into a disc about 1/4-inch thick. Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet and repeat with remaining dough. Cookies will not spread too much, so you can arrange them fairly closely together.

Bake cookies for 11-13 minutes, until bottoms and the edges are lightly browned and cookies are set.

Immediately after removing cookies from the oven, use your thumb or a small spoon to make a depression in the center of each cookie. Cool for a few minutes on the baking sheet then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

To make filling, whisk together peanut butter, confectioners’ sugar, salt and vanilla in a small microwave-safe bowl. When the mixture has come together, heat it in the microwave (in short intervals, stirring frequently), until it is soft. Working carefully with the warm filling, transfer it to a pastry bag (or plastic bag with the tip cut off) and pipe a generous dome of the filling into each cookie’s “thumbprint”.

Chill filled cookies for 20-30 minutes, or until the peanut butter is firm.

Melt the chocolate and cocoa butter in a small, heat-resistant bowl placed over a small saucepan filled with simmering (not boiling) water.

Dip chilled cookies into chocolate, let excess drip off, and place on a sheet of parchment paper to set.

    Love this recipe! Just remember to still buy Girl Scout cookies; a whole lot of Girl Scout programs are based on the proceeds from that sale (not to mention my salary!).

    Oh goodness! When I was prego with emily I wanted girl scout cookies so bad and they were no where to be found! Ugh,…I also would love a recipe for the Peanut butter patties, Ive tried a few peanut butter cookies that are “similar” but never makes the cut.

    Haha! I was laughing sooo hard when I read your post title. Those cute little girl scouts and especially their cookies are so hard to resist! I feel even more guilty because I was a girl scout so I know how it feels to be rejected and I don’t want to do that to them! Also I have seen homemade versions of the caramel delights (samoas) and thin mints. I have never made any of them before (because I feel like I having access to girl scout cookies year round would be dangerous) but I have them bookmarked to I will try and find them and share the links with you.

    I’ve tried at home thin mint cookies and it just ain’t the same! Good, but the magic just isn’t there. I just recently feel in love with the tagalongs after making myself break away from the thin mints. And whats up with the portion size? They are small enough that you can eat a row and not notice…. then the guilt…. oh, the guilt.

    Wow. These look amazing. These are my favorite Girl Scout cookies by far. My BF is hooked on Thin Mints. I’ve been making these for him: http://www.101cookbooks.com/archives/001370.html (actually the version in her cookbook), and I would dare to say that they are as good as the real thing (and better for you).

    @ Joanne–Let’s talk. My niece is Girl Scout and my sister mails me one of those “take to work” cookie order forms and has me bring them to all my NYC friends who want their fix. ;)

    So here is another way of making Tagalong-like cookies. Take two Ritz crackers, put a healthy spoon of Peanut Butter in the middle, then immerse it in the melting chocolate and voila, they taste amazing. My hubby and I like to put them in the freezer, we say it slows us down from eating them all in one sitting, but that isn’t necessarily true. They are fun to make with kids, I got the idea from my friend who is a preschool teacher. Talk about fabulous. I am going to try your recipe now too. Thanks for sharing!!!

    YES! Girl Scout Cookie season comes and goes WAY too fast for my liking. Tagalongs are my absolute favorite. I’m not ashamed to say that I buy about 6 boxes when they come on sale. The problem is not eating them all at once. I have to hide them from myself…

    Girl Scout Thin Mint copy cat recipe… I’ve made these several times and they are a good substitute for Thin Mints…

    All you need are Ritz Crackers, Chocolate Chips, and mint extract.

    Melt the chocolate chips in the microwave per package directions (or double boiler, or however you usually melt chocolate). Add about 1/4 tsp mint extract (I’ve used peppermint and mint, both are good). Dip crackers and place on waxed paper til the chocolate sets.

    They are a great substitute and very easy to make! Hope you enjoy them as much as my family and I do!
