caught in a bad romance*
Do you donut?
If you don’t donut, I am not sure we can be friends. Assuming that you are here, on this sugar imploding blog, I am assuming that you donut…or at the very least you like things covered in chocolate and rainbow sprinkles.
Donuts and I have a love affair that would make Nora Roberts jealous. And as much as I wish I could end our bad romance, it was a predetermined destiny. My mother passed down the donut loving gene to me. She had it much worse than I do…she had it so bad she used to buy boxes of donuts and hide them under her bed.
Despite all of my donut lovin’, I have always bought my donuts (except for that one time I made donut holes oh and that other time too). I would love to make them, but the time it takes to make the dough, shape them, fry them, glaze them and then finally eat them…is too much when you have a hangover. And I never want donuts more than when I have a hangover. The solution to this problem? stop drinking so much??
Buy yourself a Babycakes Donut Maker! Actually, you buy two! One for me and one for one of you!
I was skeptical of what this little donut maker claimed to do. Donuts baked in 4 minutes? Shut up.
So when I saw them go on sale (finally!!), I knew it was time to put it’s claim to the test. As soon as I walked in the door I was ripping the packaging off and plugging it in to get heated up. I pulled out the few ingredients I needed and whipped up a batch of batter. I poured the batter into a zip lock baggie and started piping it into the rounds. I closed the lid and counted down the incredible slow, agonizing, 4 minutes…lifted the lid and viola! DONUTS! Freaking donuts! In a total of 10 minutes from when I walked in the door. Could there be anything better?
As you can see, I have made lots of donuts. My favorite so far? I made a Pumpkin Spice Donut with Maple Frosting! I used the recipe for the Sour Cream Donut in the instruction manual, swapped the sour cream for Pumpkin, and added a few pinches of pumpkin pie seasoning. Then I used some leftover maple buttercream to frost them with. I am pretty positive this is what heaven must taste like.
We have a winner! Come on down Nancy, commenter #111! The random number generator was all about you tonight!
I hope you enjoy your new mini donut maker!!
Giveaway!
So here’s the low down. This is a giveaway put on by me, Jessica of TNCB. Babycakes has no idea who I am or cares that I am in love with their donut maker. I bought this with my own money. There will only be one winner, because I have to buy the hubs new tires this month (omg why do tires cost sooooo much??). Since this is just me, we don’t have to do any of that silly, tweet this, facebook that, bull. Just answer one question for me and you are entered to win!
What is your most favorite donut flavor in the whole wide donut world?
P.S. You have till Sunday night to enter, I’ll use random.org to pick the winner…that is if I haven’t overdosed on mini donut cuteness by then. And then I will email the winner, so don’t forget to include your email!

Cookie dough doughnuts… duh!
Taylor and I have big dreams of opening up a doughnut shop someday. If it weren’t for the big bucks we’d need to actually do it, or the whole getting up early part… we’re crazy enough that we just might.
Katy — September 14, 2011 @ 11:26 pm
I know it’s boring, but I have always loved plain yeast doughnuts with sugar on top. Pillowy, yeasty and delicious!
Erin @ The Spiffy Cookie — September 14, 2011 @ 11:29 pm
I am recently obsessed with glazed blueberry doughnuts. I inhale them before anyone knew they even existed.
Cathy — September 14, 2011 @ 11:33 pm
you had me at pumpkin spice donuts. I think my fave is the french cruller, at least it’s full of air so I don’t feel too guilty about eating 2…or 3
Kocinera — September 14, 2011 @ 11:33 pm
My favorite donut flavor tends to be blueberry cake, but that pumpkin spice donut sounds really, really yummy.
Caroline — September 14, 2011 @ 11:36 pm
How fun! My favourite donut ever is a coconut donut from a local ice-cream store that makes them in teensy batches every morning, absolutely perfect with a cup of cider! Although if they ever start making pumpkin spice….
Jamie T. — September 14, 2011 @ 11:37 pm
I am addicted to any Krispy Kreme donuts for the most part but my favorite would have to be a glazed devils food cake donut. I am getting a craving just thinking about it! Yum!
Sarah Zinkann — September 14, 2011 @ 11:39 pm

Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga — September 14, 2011 @ 11:39 pm
Ok Ive wanted one of these too but like you, was skeptical that it really could do what it says it could do and wow…it sounds like it can. Four minutes?!?!
And I just came up with a homemade pumpkin spice latte recipe that easy, vegan, and oh yeah…cheap
Because like you, saving money is key!
You are more than generous to sponsor this giveaway.
Fave donuts = warm with lots of frosting!!! Flavor isn’t really as important

Taryn @ Formal Fringe — September 14, 2011 @ 11:58 pm
Do I have to pick a favorite donut? That’s like picking a favorite kid!
I guess Krispy Kreme glazed donuts are like the sweet, well-mannered kid who never lets you down. But I love “Cookies ‘N Creme” donuts. They’re like a grown-up kid who’s moved out of the house and you get to see them almost never, but when you do it’s such a whirl of passion and emotion–oh, and drool. Lots of drool.
Mandy Minette — September 15, 2011 @ 12:01 am
My all-time favorite donut is the crueller!
Lauren — September 15, 2011 @ 12:17 am

Omg! I have had my in this little device for sometime. My boyfriend is obsessed with donuts and has been asking me to make them for him. So I finally broke down and bought one of those little donut baking pans and made him some S’mores donuts (recipe on my blog) that turned out WAY better than I expected. I was so happy!
Addison — September 15, 2011 @ 12:35 am
I love a classic cake donut with white glaze and sprinkles, reminds me of being a kid. But Pumpkin Spice…WOW…I think I may have a new favorite!
Nelly Rodriguez — September 15, 2011 @ 12:36 am
All time favorite is the Boston Creme Donut. BUT, I did try a filled donut…it was filled with Guava and Cream cheese. I tell you, it was amazing. Yes, I was in Miami. Looove it!
Megan — September 15, 2011 @ 12:40 am
This is a hard decision. It is either between blueberry or the classic chocolate longjohn.
Lindsey @ Hot Polka Dot — September 15, 2011 @ 1:02 am

So cuuuute! My faves are original glazed Krispy Kremes — but I love blueberry cake donuts, too!
Bekah — September 15, 2011 @ 6:28 am
When I try to pick a favorite it goes something like this…”a warm classic glazed is always good…oh, but wait, a good cake donut is awesome too…oh, but then there’s chocolate icing with fluffy white cream filling…” and on and on. Therefore I think identifying donuts I don’t like might be easier…no, wait, I don’t know if I can think of one. Ok, my answer is: my favorite type of donut is a donut. Is that an acceptable answer? And now I want one…or two
Heather — September 15, 2011 @ 6:34 am
My favorite donut is a raspberry filled glazed donut…yumm!

old fashioned glazed!
Stephanie @ The Rest is Still Unwritten — September 15, 2011 @ 1:50 pm
Hands down it’s Long John’s…with custard. OMG! I can’t get enough of them…if only my waist agreed with that!
Kristen — September 15, 2011 @ 1:51 pm
Any hot off the press donut is SINFUL!!! That’s hard to come by now that Krispy Kreme’s is no longer in my neck of the woods, so I’d have to say a maple bar or a glazed blueberry cake. Your pumpkin with maple icing sounds AMAZING!!!!
Dawn — September 15, 2011 @ 1:52 pm
My favorite doughnut is chocolate glazed. I usually get the glazed long johns because they are bigger! Great, now I need one NOW!
Diana Falcon — September 15, 2011 @ 1:54 pm
Hey Jess, Ohh donuts! When Matt was a full time baker he made donuts for the cafe, he came home smelling mmmm, better than any cologne you could buy! I have tried tons of flavored donuts and to be honest I still love just the traditional Glazed donuts! It just a comfort thing.

Damn now I want a Donut!

My favorite would be glazed, I just love the sugary simplicity of it! Yum!

My favorite donut would have to be the chocolate long john!:)
Lauren — September 15, 2011 @ 1:59 pm
The apple cider donut recipe from Smitten Kitchen makes THE best donuts!!! Best. Ever.
Elizabeth Branch — September 15, 2011 @ 2:01 pm
I love so many kinds of donuts. My all time favorite donuts are chocolate covered cream-filled. I like the classic glazed, or sprinkles, or really any that look cute. My friends and I used to go to the only Krispy Kreme in town, buy some donuts, and sit down around a table and eat them. Unfortunately, there isn’t a Krispy Kreme here anymore because a tornado took it out back in April. So no more donuts for us.
Isn’t that sad? But if I won this donut maker, I could reintroduce donuts to this city and everyone would be able to satisfy their donut cravings that have only gotten bigger over the last 4 months. So really, if I win this donut maker, everyone wins.
Emily@SoDomesticated — September 15, 2011 @ 2:04 pm
Mmmmm… I love them all. ALL. But I guess if I had to choose, it would be maple glazed.
Ashley Albrektson — September 15, 2011 @ 2:08 pm
Donuts…mmmmm…my mouth is watering! My fave donut EVA is coconut with vanilla frosting and shaved coconut on top. Nom Nom Nom! =)
Jey — September 15, 2011 @ 2:09 pm
I could eat a thousand Maple Logs from Top Pot Donuts in Seattle. So freaking delicious.
Tonia — September 15, 2011 @ 2:11 pm
Thank goodness Krispie Kreme on Bruce B Downs shut down a few years ago or I’d have the biggest a** in Tampa! They are my favorite especially when that HOT sign is lit!
trouble — September 15, 2011 @ 2:12 pm
Wow, it’s look delicious.
Dennis — September 15, 2011 @ 2:14 pm
A hot Apple Cider Donut. All I need to do is take one bite and suddenly I’m 8 years old again, picking apples at an orchard with my family.
jeannette — September 15, 2011 @ 2:15 pm
Omgdonuts. I was skeptical of this doo-dad (but also too poor to buy it LOL) but my favorite flavor is definitely blueberry cake donuts with crackly white glaze. Or lemon or pumpkin or maple or just plain ole glazed (krispy kreme plzzz!) Great. Now I want donuts. How is my female mind going to justify this one
Erin — September 15, 2011 @ 2:23 pm
Mmmm. Boston Cream!!! YUM!
Natalie — September 15, 2011 @ 2:26 pm
Really? You want me to pick just ONE favorite donut? Here’s my final answer then: The kind that start with Dough and end with… Well, you get the idea.
Meredith — September 15, 2011 @ 2:36 pm
BLUEBERRY. It’s the only donut worthy of being called a donut. I have no idea what that means.
Cassie — September 15, 2011 @ 2:42 pm
I think it is a tie between cake donuts with chocolate frosting or cake donuts with the cinnamon powdered sugar topping. Basically cake donuts are key!
Katie B. — September 15, 2011 @ 2:43 pm
O.M.G., love! Favorite doughnut. . .hmm. Chocolate glazed cake? Cinnamon sugar? Plain? I’m going to probably just go with “any.”
Kristin — September 15, 2011 @ 2:48 pm
I guess if I could only eat one doughnut for the rest of my life it would be a plain glazed doughnut. Simple, easy, and life altering when it’s piping hot!
Sara — September 15, 2011 @ 2:53 pm
My boyfriend’s grandma’s homemade donuts are by far my favourite. Just plain, sugar and cinnamon! So yummy!
Andrea {From the Bookshelf} — September 15, 2011 @ 2:54 pm
I love donuts.
Favorite? Hard to say. But a plain donut, with chocolate glaze and chopped toffee bits would be right up there for me.
But wait! I love jelly donuts too!
Must be I am an equal opportunity donut lover.
Erin N. — September 15, 2011 @ 2:55 pm
My favorite doughnut is what ever one that I would give to my kids and watch their eyes light up. As the kids ages changed the doughnut changed.
Sara — September 15, 2011 @ 3:00 pm

I’m kind of a purist when it comes to doughnuts. I’ll take a warm glazed over a flavored one any day
erika — September 15, 2011 @ 3:39 pm
I have simple tastes. Give me a basic donut with a decadent dark chocolate glaze and I am in heaven. Although now I really really really want to try a pumpkin spice donut!
Lindsay S — September 15, 2011 @ 3:44 pm
Because I can never pick just one, I always go for the donut “L.-B.O.B.” (a.k.a. little bit of both)…a maple bar and a donut with pink frosting and sprinkles Amaze-balls.
Lindsay — September 15, 2011 @ 3:55 pm
I love cinnamon sugar donuts from krispy kreme! Especially warm! They don’t always have them, but given my addiction to sugar, anything coated with cinnamon and sugar is just too hard to resist.
Ashley — September 15, 2011 @ 3:59 pm
Mine would certainly include pink frosting and RAINBOW!! SPRINKLES!!!
Kathy Escobio — September 15, 2011 @ 4:00 pm
My ultimate favorite has to be a ‘regulation’ (standard) glazed doughnut, preferably purchased while the “HOT” sign is blazing. I am excited just thinking about how that hot doughnut deflates in my mouth and becomes one with my tongue…Surely, this is also God’s favorite doughnut.
Diane Rhines — September 15, 2011 @ 4:16 pm
I love any donut! So hard to pick my favorite – however there is a store around the corner from us and they make THE BEST (not to mention biggest) apple fritters!
Amy's Cooking Adventures — September 15, 2011 @ 4:24 pm
Oh I’d love to win this–or maybe I shouldn’t – Ha!
I love a simple donut with a ton of chocolate glaze, but your pumpkin spice donut sounds divine!

Laura — September 15, 2011 @ 4:32 pm
For me, it’d have to be the plain ol’ yeast donut with still-warm glaze on top. Ooooh, so good when you pull them out of the box and they almost fall apart in your hands of how tender they are.
HEAVEN!
Tanya — September 15, 2011 @ 4:40 pm

I’m a fan of donut plant in NYC. They make a coconut cream donut that’s heavenly. But pumpkin maple? I could certainly make room for pumpkin maple?
Christine — September 15, 2011 @ 6:12 pm
Cute cakes! Pumpkin spice is my fave!! I often end up trying a pumpkin donut that is dry, lacking in flavor, and overall a big letdown. But when you come across the place that sells the moist donut with just the right amount of pumpkin flavor and spice–hard to beat! Would be amazing if I could just whip some up with this machine! Thanks for putting together this giveaway!

My favorite donut flavor is the custard filled one with a chocolate glaze. One reason it’s my favorite is that when I was a kid once a week my dad took me to the local bakery where I had a custard filled donut with chocolate milk. It was just us and we had a great time. He passed away when I was a teenager. So going to the bakery with him for donuts is one of my favorite childhood memories.

Sounds kinda strange, but my mum and I pulled it off one morning

Growing up my grandmother made the most wonderful jelly filled donuts. She would line them up on the dining room table over these very large (bed sheet sized) white towels. It was agony waiting for them to raise. Sometimes when she was feeling like there was a little money left over for the month, instead of piping jelly inside, she would top them with chocolate and nuts. Heavenly! Whenever I eat a donut I always think of my grandma. Thanks for your blog. I love it!

Charlotte Parish — September 15, 2011 @ 9:04 pm
Hi! I’d like to enter your contest (because donuts are incredibly epic and a maker would be the best thing ever). And I’d have to say that the best donut I have ever had was a pumpkin maple cinnamon covered donut. It sounds extreme and too much, but honestly it was like the entirety of fall wrapped into into circle of deliciousness. The key is to have the pumpkin flavor in the dough, then use a maple syrup glaze and sprinkle the cinnamon/brown sugar on top so it sticks to that. The version I had was also more subtle on the pumpkin than than the other two flavors, but I think as long as you emphasis either the pumpkin OR the maple but not both it would still work.

Hillary — September 16, 2011 @ 10:42 am
My father owns a maple syrup shack…so I have to go with maple doughnuts! With maple glaze! A march essential here in Michigan.
Pamela B — September 16, 2011 @ 10:57 am
Favourite doughnut…. hmmm….. Has to be maple glazed, maybe even with some bacon on it – combining two of life’s best foods and tastes together into awesomeness!!!
Jaclyn — September 16, 2011 @ 11:17 am
Definitely plain old glazed! Especially when they’re warm..drool…
tiffany — September 16, 2011 @ 11:22 am
So hard to pick just one flavor! It would have to be jelly filled.
Mel — September 16, 2011 @ 12:22 pm
I love creme-filled long johns, with chocolate frosting. It’s what I picked EVERY time my mom let my brother and I get donuts at the store when we were little, and it’s still my go-to pick. I’ve perfected the art of nibbling away the outside edges of donut, the parts that don’t have any filling, and then just devouring the nummy nummy filling
Melisa — September 16, 2011 @ 12:40 pm
I don’t think I’ve ever met a doughnut that I haven’t liked. Favorite is probably maple glazed or apple fritter.
Shaneka M. — September 16, 2011 @ 12:41 pm
I love pumpkin spice donuts!!! I wait all year to stock up on them and freeze them.
Courtney Anstaett — September 16, 2011 @ 12:42 pm
I love Pumpkin Donuts!!!
Katie from Katie's Cucina — September 16, 2011 @ 12:47 pm
this is a tough question… just one flavor? I would have to say there is nothing better than a glazed donut. Although raspberry filled donuts do make me swoon, too!
Thank you for hosting the giveaway out of pocket. Your too kind.
Julie — September 16, 2011 @ 12:52 pm
My favorite is apple cider donuts.
Kristan Heyman — September 16, 2011 @ 12:58 pm
I love chocolate cake donuts or pumpkin donuts! My kids would love to make their own donuts!
Kristi — September 16, 2011 @ 1:10 pm
I love Old Fashioned Donuts but also love cake donuts, apple fritters! mmmm
Valerie — September 16, 2011 @ 1:19 pm
My favorite flavor has to be chocolate, hands down!
Joy — September 16, 2011 @ 1:25 pm
There’s something that I simply love about a good, plain doughnut… they’re the best for dunking!
Jessica — September 16, 2011 @ 1:42 pm
Blueberry or a plain cake doughnut..depends.
Angela @ The Dancer Bakes — September 16, 2011 @ 1:49 pm
I’m also romantically involved with donuts – does that mean that the donuts are two-timing us??
But I don’t know if I could pick a favorite flavor! Devil’s food cake donuts, sour cream cake donuts, red velvet cake donuts, and chocolate frosted angel cream filled (the stuff that’s like frosting) are among my top favorites. But don’t make me choose one…
Sam Allen — September 16, 2011 @ 1:53 pm
Nothing like a great, moist, well frosted old fashion doughnut!!!
Sarah Elizabeth — September 16, 2011 @ 2:13 pm
My favorite doughnut is a raised doughnut with pink strawberry frosting and rainbow jimmies. Although I wouldn’t say boo to a maple frosted… or a classic sour cream… or a blueberry cake… or any doughnut, ever. They all have a place in my heart, and in my stomach. Thanks for the giveaway!
Meghan H — September 16, 2011 @ 2:29 pm
2 Words. Chocolate. Creamstick. I am a fan of all the varieties of doughnuts. The dense cake donut. The subtle glazed. The wonderful flavors: Apple, Pumpkin, Chocolate. And let’s not forget the variety of toppings: nuts, sprinkles, glaze, ganache… I LOVE THEM ALL. But chocolate creamsticks win hands down. I’d make some comment about how there is a party in my mouth with every cream filled stick but I can already hear the “that’s what she said” comments. Me+Chocolate Creamsticks=Forever in love.
Sweettwist_Meg — September 16, 2011 @ 2:48 pm
Chocolate Coconut!! I keep seeing a lot of pumpkin doughnuts as well. I would like to try making those.
Smylee — September 16, 2011 @ 3:22 pm
Mmmm. That pumpkin spice one sounds pretty much amazing. But I heart French curlers.
Kenni — September 16, 2011 @ 3:35 pm
When it’s pumpkin season, I opt for that, but any other time I’m all about Boston Cream.
Jacqui — September 16, 2011 @ 3:49 pm
I am obsessed with classic vanilla cream donuts!! Or, when I find them, red velvet donuts are always delicious
Jenna Medina — September 16, 2011 @ 3:55 pm
Oh man! I have always loved blueberry cake donuts!! Yum!! Hope I get to come up with a recipe for that with a brand new babycakes donut maker!!
Michelle — September 16, 2011 @ 4:17 pm
Now I want donuts really bad! My favorite is just a glazed sour cream donut. The texture just adds that extra bit. There is also the added bonus that in a crowd it’s always the one that everyone else ignores so I don’t have to rush to get there first.
K. Gardner — September 16, 2011 @ 4:24 pm
I love plain cake donuts without frosting.

I love a plain, glazed yeast donut. Soft and just melts when it hits your mouth, which is why you need atleast two of them. And you must have with a coffee. My mouth is actually salivating and my ass is widening just thinking about having this!
Judith — September 16, 2011 @ 10:25 pm
Yum Yum Donuts in my area makes a donut they call ‘ White Lightning’. A vanilla donut filled with the most amazing vanilla creme filling (can’t figure out how they make that), topped with vanilla frosting and vanilla jimmies. It’s heavenly.
Heather g. — September 16, 2011 @ 10:53 pm
We recently got a VooDoo donuts in town and dayum…they’re the bomb. Love the maple bacon bar of course, but they also make a mean buttermilk bar! Numyummy…

I love, love, LOVE Boston Cream donuts. They have just enough chocolate, and a ooey, gooey yummy inside! Back in elementary and middle school, my mom used drive me to school and treat me to Krispy Kreme on Friday mornings. It was the highlight of my week! I used to have them fresh off the conveyer belt, with chocolate milk. Yummm.
Jessica — September 17, 2011 @ 11:20 am
APPLE DONUTS!! When it’s not apple season, strawberry or vanilla frosted. (Or still apple donuts…)
Angela Willis — September 17, 2011 @ 12:35 pm
Oh, my! I am not sure that I can answer this honestly! I absolutely love a good pumpkin cake donut, oh, and a raspberry filled power sugared bismark, however, you can’t beat a plain warm glazed yeasty one! Simplicity at its best!

Here in Portland (OR), we are famous for our Voodoo Doughnuts — they have hilarious voodoo doll shaped doughnuts with raspberry filling and a pretzel stake in it’s heart. Also, the Marshall Matters is hilarious:
plain cake doughnut with vanilla frosting and mini M&M’s (get it??). Personally, I love a good Boston creme, and Voodoo does a Portland Creme, which is the same but with eyeballs on top. (Goofy.) The Maple Bacon bar (Maple bar with two slices of bacon on top) is pretty good too. Check ‘em out – http://voodoodoughnut.com/menu.php Also ones with Cap’n Crunch or Fruit Loops on them…

Krispy kreme donuts of any sort are my favorite, but glazed is the best!
walker — September 18, 2011 @ 7:27 pm
Those donuts of yours look unbelievably tempting, and I’d be thrilled to get the goodness of homemade donuts without the pain and punishment that comes with deep-frying. I tend to avoid favoritism by buying donuts in quantities of at least a half dozen, meaning that there is no need to choose…but in a bind, my favorite one would have to be a maple bar with custard filling.
Sam — September 18, 2011 @ 7:55 pm
I’d have to say that pumpkin is definitely my favorite. And if you add chocolate glaze/filling, I am putty in your hands.
Sara — September 18, 2011 @ 8:11 pm
I think my favorite flavor is plain cake dusted with sugar.
