Thoughts too long for Twitter.*

I usually have thoughts that are a little too long to share in 140 characters on twitter and are a little too random or long to share on Facebook. So I figured since I already make this blog all about me, why not share them here with you? It will also give me a chance to share pointless photos of my pets that have nothing to do with this post….because yes, I totally am that person.

Bobbi the Cat and Mini Lemon Meringue Pies

1. Jorge and I are house (rental) shopping. It’s STRESSING me out more than any time before. We move back to Tampa in a little under a month and every night I go to bed freaking out. Is this because I am getting older? No seriously, hear me out. I moved from Texas to Florida with exactly 1 large moving box and 1 zebra duffel bag at 18. Since then, I have moved 6 times (all within the state of Florida). In 7 years, I have moved 6 times with no worries or stress. But this time I can’t stop thinking about dates and places and kitchens and boxes and what if the movers break my stuff and what if we can’t find a place, etc. I can only assume it’s because I am getting older…which just stresses me out more.

2. I made She & Him mugs this past weekend. I used two $1 mugs from the Dollar Tree and a oil based gold sharpie. Sure you could do Mr & Mrs, but I don’t want to be called Mrs. No I do not have a good reason why, I just don’t like it. I also hate when people address things to Mr. & Mrs. Jorge Segarra. That’s crap, I deserve my name in there too.

3. I recently found a blog called Inspiring The Everyday that has some of the prettiest photography I have ever seen, ever. This is what I aspire to…but it’s just so much work and I am too easily distracted. So instead we should all look at these beautiful photographs and pretend like I took them.

4. Over the past week there have been a lot of articles written about restaurants not wanting people to take photos in their restaurants of the food. It all started with this NYT article and went crazy from there. I — as a person who loves to discreetly take photos of food at restaurants and instagram it — think it’s total crap. First of all, me photographing and sharing about your restaurant HELPS you. Secondly, I am a paying customer and if I want to snap a quick shot of my food, I will.

Brody sleeping.

5. I made steaks for dinner tonight. Except my grill was out of propane and I didn’t want to take the time to heat up the oven. So I pan fried them. They were edible…if you doused them in enough steak sauce that they looked like they were swimming in it. Don’t worry, I promise there are no upcoming recipes for Steak & A1 soup.

6. I decided to try something new with my makeup this week. I pulled out my giant 15 piece anniversary Urban Decay eyeliner set (<–This link is to show you what I have, not to get you to buy it from there. That is a total rip-off. Mine came from Ulta for much less.) that I couldn’t live without and decided to try out this peacock eyeliner look I found. I looked like a kid that got to play with markers in class. It wasn’t pretty, unless you are going for kindergarden chic.

7. On Monday, I went to the store and forgot my phone at home. During this 1 hour separation, I realized I have no idea what people did before technology. I couldn’t search where the nearest liquor store was to me (I needed wine, don’t judge me). I couldn’t google to see if I could get my mascara cheaper on amazon. I was forced to stand in line and entertain myself in the checkout line. And worse, I constantly felt like the world was going to end and I would have no way of knowing about it because my iPhone was at home sitting on the kitchen counter. So to answer my own question, maybe before technology people were less neurotic…and didn’t use Amazon Prime like it’s their lifeline.

Kitty Visitor

8. ::climbing on my soap box:: Today we had a neighborhood kitty visitor. He is friendly and adorable and not neutered. If you are going to insist on letting your animals roam around outside, do the right thing and get your pet spayed or neutered.  It infuriates me to no end when people are not responsible pet owners. With a little research, you could easily find a clinic to do it for under $100…and if we all did it, there would be no need for those horrible ASPCA commercials that make me bawl every time I see them. Please, do the right thing. For a good laugh and to help with the cause, check out IHateBalls.com. ::climbing off my soap box now, I swear::

9. Above in the photo, that cherub looking angel thing is not mine. Yes, it’s in the yard, but it’s not mine. It belongs to whoever lived here before…I think they left it because it is creepy and it’s eyes follow you when you walk. I left it out there because it’s really heavy and I can’t drag it out to the garbage. Also, I find chubby naked statues kind of funny.

10. I am back to stressing about the move again (that was quick, right?). Anybody want to come over and help pack? I can pay in cookies and vodka.

11.  I recently learned that if you take Katy Perry’s face and stick it on Paula Deen’s body…it’s still Paula Deen. Well, Paula 30 years ago. I am now secretly obsessing over who my older face twin is. Please don’t tell me it’s Honey Boo Boo’s Mama.

12. That’s it for this week. Next week I am coming back with a tasty casserole that is full of broccoli, quinoa and cheesey goodness. Bonus: it has no cans of crap in it.

See ya Monday! :)

Good luck with your move. For a nonmilitary family, I have moved at least 10 times in 10 years. The last few, totally stressed me out, too. Finding a place, my stuff, getting older, having blog props that could break :) Deep breaths. And I wish you guys the best in the transition!

    Btw, been enjoying your book!

Thanks Averie! And yes, props breaking is one of my high stressers! :)

That Urban Decay set looks amazing! However, I am the least qualified person in the world to do makeup — I leave that to my roommate (she works for a skincare company and used to be a makeup artist). I can’t line my lips or put on liquid eyeliner to save my life.

Next time your grill runs out of propane, this is how my mom fixes steaks: sear them in a skillet (iron, preferably) until they have a nice crust of flavor on them, then finish them off in the oven. Delicious!

    • Jessica replied: — January 25th, 2013 @ 12:24 pm

I will have to try that! Thanks Virginia, you are saving future steaks.

I am totally not opposed to more posts like this from you in the future. Sometimes it’s nice to not read about a recipe and read about life! And now I have three tabs of stuff you suggested to look at lol. Dude, you and Jorge move as much as Pete and I do! Is he in the military or just has a really “move all the time” job? Don’t stress, it will be fine! Think of all the great cuban sandwiches you will eat in Tampa lol.

    • Jessica replied: — January 25th, 2013 @ 12:26 pm

Not Military, more like one of the moves was me out of my parents house at 19. A few more were new place, getting married and moving in together, and then out growing our apartment. Then we moved for his job. Then we moved into a house for more space. And now we are moving to be back in the city with all our family/friends.

So no, apparently we just like to move…a lot. :) And yes, can’t wait to get back to some of the good food in Tampa!

ihateballs is funny, but “Please don’t tell me it’s Honey Boo Boo’s Mama” made me laugh so hard I choked. on my own… saliva? whatever. I’m still giggling.

forgetting your phone – I know EXACTLY what that is like. the other day, I forgot mine, and I was pulling out of the driveway. my dilemma? do I go back in to get it, and cause a full on double dachshund frenzy, or … let the pups remain calm and… I GO into a frenzy without the phone?? pups won, and I lost… truly lost.

good luck with the move – I hope it all goes smoothly!

Hi! Long time reader, first time commenter. I’m an animal lover myself and I love seeing pictures of your pets. :-) Where I live there is a great animal hospital that does spays for $45 neuters for $35.

In the past 2 years, I’ve taken in 3 stray cats and rescued one kitten who now lives with my sister-in-law. If I won the lottery, I would build a huge house so I could rescue every stray cat I see! :-)

Oh and I have to change the channel every time I see one of those ASPCA commercials. I’ve learned to recognize the music so I can quicly grab the remote!

    • Jessica replied: — January 25th, 2013 @ 12:28 pm

Girl. ME TOO. Every time I hear that stupid song I change the channel immediately. Can’t take it!

PS People like you give me hope! We have 4 cats (all strays that we took in) and 1 dog. I’m glad there are other animal lovers out there like me!

I want to see a pic of you with the peacock eye look! And I sure hope NOONE ever grows up to look like Honey Boo Boo’s Mama. ack!
Love your posts – both food and non-food. Like another commentor said, it’s nice to read about life once in a while. It reminds us all that we are not the only people that these things happen to. And makes us laugh so hard that we choke. at work. oops.

    Have a stress-free weekend!

I so agree with you about spaying/neutering!! We had an adorable, sweet kitty decide to take up residence in our backyard and I took her to a local vet to make sure she was fixed. If she wasn’t, we were going to pay for it. I did NOT want kittens in my backyard. I’m such an animal person that I would’ve wanted to keep them all! *sigh* :)

Girl, as always, you crack me up! I’m literally sitting here snickering whilst I lick the peanut butter mixed with marshmallow fluff off of my spoon {don’t judge me, it’s Friday}. ;) Moving stresses me out, too, and yes, I think the increasing anxiety does come with getting older because you have more to worry about & be responsible for than just a zebra duffel. Incidentally, when I moved from FL to TX {and then back to FL again}, I came with whatever I could stuff in my gold Saturn {BLEH.} and the clothes on my back. Life was simpler then. Now I feel like I’d need one of those giant Walmart trucks to move our life. Dear Lord, please don’t make me move again anytime soon. Anyway, if you lived closer I would totally show up on your doorstep with a bottle of wine, some baked goods, & my pup Farley for comic relief. Although, I don’t know how much actual packing would get done now that I’ve written that out. Hope you have a great {worry-free} weekend!

Don’t worry about your house hunting stress, it’s completely normal. I felt the same way when we were looking for houses a few years back and the thought of packing alone gave me the creeps. The make up stuff cracked me up. I totally relate! Winged eyeliner was so hard for me to master. LOL.

For some reason, I am sad that you’re leaving Jacksonville. I live near Savannah and always thought that it would be great to meet you one day since you’re so close to my area. But, Tampa is a little far to travel for an imaginery friendship. I will continuing make your donuts and dream of what could have been. ;)

Best of luck in your move!

You are awesome. The article about photos in restaurants – total bogus. You are right – we are paying for food, we can photograph our food. And don’t get me started on moving. I’m doing it right now so I feel you pain and totally wish we could drink a bottle of wine together and stress about it.
